This week’s #FarmerFriday features 2nd-year vend

This week’s #FarmerFriday features 2nd-year vendor Sprouted Earth Farm! John and Erin purchased their 40-acre farm in Barnum in 2018. For now, they cultivate less than one acre, but plan to work up to as many as 8, the total tillable acres on the farm. They were bringing impressive greens as soon as the market opened in May thanks to their ingenious movable hoop house, which covered their early crops in March and then moved to shelter their tomatoes and cucumbers in May!
Erin and John moved to the Northland from Eugene, OR, but have roots in the midwest and a personal connection to the Northland (they met on a geology work site in Thunder Bay and then got married in Bayfield in 2019!). John took a career-path detour to start the farm and Erin continues to work an off-farm job in her field, contributing to the farm in a myriad of ways on evenings and weekends. Their dog Pepper and two barn cats also do the important work of being cute and chasing things around 😉 Sprouted Earth will have tons of great stuff at the market on Saturday, including bunched greens (kale, chard, collard greens, spinach), salad mix, head lettuce, microgreens, cucumbers, carrots, garlic scapes, basil, jalapeños, and even a few summer squash and eggplant!

A friendly reminder to everyone to wear a face covering tomorrow at market! Also new this Saturday, there will be a door attendant making sure we stay at/below our 30 person capacity. Shop safe, and limit socializing so all have an opportunity to get in and purchase their veggies!

For this week’s #FarmerFriday meet Barb Hollinda

For this week’s #FarmerFriday meet Barb Hollinday of Barb’s Garden! Barb operates the family farm passed down from her grandfather, who purchased it in 1918. Located in Duluth Township, Barb specializes in spring bedding plants, perennials, vegetable plants, and herbs including many unique and hard-to-find varieties. She starts seeds in January each year, moves them to the greenhouse in March, and has impressive, beautiful transplants available each year in May.
Barb’s Garden is an impressive operation. She is grateful for her parents, the land they have shared for 100 years, and the mentoring along the way. She began digging in the dirt when she was very small and now enjoys sharing her farm with her grandchildren in the summer.
This week barb will have onions, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and lots of bedding plants available! She is taking pre-orders to be picked up at the farmer’s market. Contact her at barb.hollinday@gmail.com or visit her website www.riversedgegardens.com
