Farmer Doug

Doug and Lois Hoffbauer are veteran farmers who have been affiliated with the Duluth farmer’s Market for over 30 years. Their business, Farmer Doug,  sells maple syrup and perennials in the spring, and  Christmas trees and wreaths during the winter season. Doug graduated with a degree in forestry education, and from there started planting trees and farming vegetables with his wife. Multiple mentors and a strong community network taught the Hoffbauer’s how to build their productive, diverse family brand.

Doug sees a farmer’s life as “mutually beneficial” for the community and individual, where the food is nutritious and flavorful, and the earth is producing plentiful crops. Doug believes farms are run well when the people who work at the farm are dedicated to it. He credits a large part of the family success to the many people who walked their lands, sampled their produce and soils, and left good pieces of advice along the way.
